A land that grabs you by the throat
Colours, smells and tastes. Maremma’s gourmet food and wine have an amazing – and dangerous – trick of grabbing you by the throat, charming, seducing and conquering you with a perfect combination of genuinely simple traditions. You can’t not be spoilt of choice. Olive oil, honey, sweet chestnuts (the best of which are found in Monte Amiata’s thick chestnut woods and sport the IGP certification) and then cheese, meat and game, including the region’s symbol, wild boar. The diverse world of gourmet Maremma offers countless excellent specialities to enjoy. Special fish and meat recipes, their roots stretching back into time, conserve the pronounced features of this ancient corner of Tuscany. Not forgetting the wine. One way of exploring the region is to follow the province’s three thematic “Wine Routes”: the Colli di Maremma (Maremman Hills) Wine Route that comprises thirteen different communes, the Monteregio di Massa Marittima Wine Route around the Metalliferous Hills and finally the Montecucco Wine Route through the hills between Cinigiano and Monte Amiata.
